Delta State was created on the 27th of August, 1991 from the defunct Bendel State. Bendel State was formerly known as the Midwestern Region at the time it gained regional status in August, 1963, from the then western region. At the inception of Delta State it was made up of twelve political divisions called Local Government Areas (L.G.A), which was later increased to 19 in 1996. Presently the State is made up of 25 Local Government Areas.
They are: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Bomadi, Burutu, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, lka North East, lka South, Isoko North, Isoko South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West Okpe, Oshimili North Oshimili South, Patani, Sapele, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ukwani, Uvwie, Warri North, Warri South and Warri South West. Delta State lies roughly between longitudes 5°00 and 6°45’E and latitudes 5°00 and 6°30’N. It has a total land area of 16,842 sq. km.

Burutu is a Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria. It lies on the coast of the Niger Delta on two sides of the River, a channel of the River Niger, 30 kilometres from Benin.
Ethiope East
Ethiope East is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarter is located at Isiokolo. It has three districts, namely, Abraka, Agbon and Isiokolo. It also has 67 villages.
Ethiope West
Ethiope West is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Oghara Town. It has an area of 536 km2 and a population of 203,592 at the 2006 census.
lka North East
Ika North East is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Owa Oyibu. It has an area of 463 km2 and a population of 183,657 at the 2006 census.
lka South
Ika South is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Ika South headquarters are in the town of Agbor. It has an area of 436 km2 and a population of 162,594 at the 2006 census.
Isoko North
Isoko North is one of two Local Government Areas (LGA) in the Isoko region of Delta State, the other being Isoko South. The population of Isoko North was approximately 112,000 as of 2003.
Isoko South
Isoko South is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Isoko region of Delta State, Nigeria. With its headquarters at Oleh, Nigeria, it is one of the two local governments that make up the Isoko region.
Ndokwa East
Ndokwa East is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Aboh. It has an area of 1,617 km2 and a population of 103,171 at the 2006 census.
Ndokwa West
Ndokwa West is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Kwale(Utagba-Ogbe). It has an area of 816 km2 and a population of 149,325.
Oshimili North
The Oshimili North is one of the Local Government Areas of Delta State, South-south region of Nigeria. It was created in 1997, until its creation, was part of the old Oshimili LGA.

Oshimili South is one of the twenty-five Local Government Areas making up Delta State, Nigeria. It is situated in the Niger Delta Region/the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria.
Okpe
Okpe is a kingdom in Delta State, Nigeria. Today, it is also the name of a local government area. It is one of the many kingdoms that make up Urhobo tribe. Its capital is Orerokpe.
Patani
Patani is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Patani. It has an area of 217 km2 and a population of 67,707 at the 2006 census.
Sapele
The origin of the name is believed to be an anglicized derivation of the Okpe word ‘Uriapele’, named after a local deity, the shrine of which can still be found in the centre of the city.
Udu
Udu is one of the Urhobo kingdoms, and has its own king, or ovie. It has a population estimate of about 100,000 people and it is about 5 minutes drive away from Warri Airport.

Ughelli South is a Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. It is made up of six Urhobo kingdoms namely: Ughievwen, Arhavwarien, Effurun Otor, Eghwu, Okparabe and Olomu.

The Ukwuani Local Government (also called Ndokwa Ethnic Nationality) are located in the southern part of Nigeria in the western part of the Niger Delta and other areas.
Uvwie
Uvwie is one of the twenty-five Local Government Areas (LGA) in Delta State, Nigeria, and is one of the Urhobo kingdoms. Uvwie also refers to the people and their language.
